CMM1101 Reading Media Texts
The unit offers an overview of critical approaches used within film and
media studies as forms of media textual analysis. It examines a variety
of media texts including film, television, advertisements, photography
and the press. It considers both aesthetic practices and ideological issues.
It introduces students to a number of key theoretical perspectives and
approaches including examination of the ?language? of the media, semiology,
theories of narrative structure, genre theory, ideology and discourse.
It does this through analysis, discussion, exercises and written work,
use of critical reading, and close examination of significant media texts.
The unit will consider issues of representation, looking at the way media
texts construct ideological ways of understanding and making sense of
the world.
CMM1102 Effective Communications Strategies
Communicating effectively within a variety of contexts is a key requirement
for success in todays professional environments. Whether applying for
research funding, proposing a campaign strategy or a budget for an independent
film, clear communication is essential. Good communication starts with
research. What information is required, by whom, and how is it best delivered?
Oral and written proposals, the costing and presentation of a budget,
and the writing up of a report are all addressed. This unit also addresses
public speaking and presentation, interviewing and being interviewed and
using computer-based presentation tools.
CMM1113 Media and Social Context
Introduces students to the main theories and methodologies for understanding
and analyzing communication and media in their social context. A wide
range of communication practices (including speech and broadcasting) and
media texts (including print and audio visual texts) are examined from
a variety of inter-related perspectives.
CMM1104 Writing for the Media
This unit introduces students to the skills of writing and communicating
in different contexts. It includes a study of the conventions of communication
in different media together with elements of journalism feature writing,
advertising, copywriting and public relations writing.
IMM1120 Introduction to Digital Technologies and Multimedia
This unit is designed to give students from diverse backgrounds an introduction
to digital Multimedia and Internet technologies. The courses will include
both practical and theoretical components relating to the development
of Interactive Multimedia products for CD-ROM and the Internet. The theoretical
component will consist of the major concepts within the field of digital
media such as Instructional and Interface Design, Project Management,
and social and workplace issues. Students will also develop practical
skills in Website development and multimedia authoring.
IMM1121 Digital Photomedia
This unit includes the role of photomedia concepts and production styles within an interactive multimedia context; an introduction to principles and practices required for a thorough understanding of IMM graphics creation, manipulation and use; an introduction to applications software and hardware which supports the development of image resources for IMM.
