Unit descriptions for Diploma of Business

ACC1100 Accounting I
This introductory accounting unit introduces students to accounting as an information system. This unit addresses the purposes of accounting, users of accounting information, and recording and presentation as well as analysis and interpretation of financial information. The role of accounting from an internal users perspective is also addressed in terms of analysis of cost behaviour, accounting for overheads, accounting for decision making, and budget preparation.


ECF1110 Economics 1
Introduction to economics; economics methodology; theory of the firm; governments influence on firm behaviour; international trade; the macroeconomy and macroeconomic goals; the inflation and the unemployment trade-off; sustainable economic development.


ECF1120 Finance I
An introduction to the study of finance; the time value of money; DCF methods of investment appraisal; risk and investment decisions; sources of funds and information; working capital management.


ECF1150 Business Statistics I
An introductory quantitative unit demonstrating statistical techniques used extensively by marketing, accounting, quality control, finance, management and other business departments and individuals involved in making managerial decisions.


LAW1100 Legal Framework I
The nature, function and purpose of law, the sources of law in Australia and the Australian legal system, the process of law making, the Law of Negligence, Defamation and Contract, the W.A. Fair Trading Act, and an introduction to the Australian Constitution.


MAN1100 Management I
The emergence of Management in western industrial society. Each theory of management and its application is reviewed from Taylorism to modern management thought. The classical functions of management are considered together with contemporary issues which have become important for the management function.


MKT1100 Marketing 1
This unit introduces the principles and concepts of marketing entailing the marketing planning process, marketing environment, market segmentation, consumer behavior, marketing research, and the marketing mix elements. The semester-long marketing plan project based on a given marketing case is the unit's major feature.


MKT1101 Professional Communication 1
The ability to communicate effectively has been recognized as an essential skill for those wanting to be successful in business and/or personal relationships. This skills-based unit uses a number of practical activities to improve students' overall communication skills. While it addresses four main areas, organizational communications, oral communications, written communications and communicatuons to secure a job, the main emphasis is on developing effective and persuasive oral presentation skills.


MIS1100 Information Systems I
This unit provides practical and theoretical education on the fundamentals of information systems. The unit also provides an opportunity for students to become skilled in the use of microcomputer-networked software to solve business problems.
