Nursing

BUS100 Accounting
Provides an introduction to basic procedures and principles of accounting and acquaints them with its function in business and non-trading enterprises. Students will develop general and business literacy skills and recognise the need to process and report financial data responsibly, reliably and with integrity.

BUS102 Communication.
This unit develops literacy and communication skills relevant to business, and better equips students with skills required for further study in an academic environment.

BUS103 Economics
This unit provides a program that reflects the importance of economics in today's society and introduces students to key economic issues, establishing a modest level of economic literacy. Students will develop an understanding of the economic framework and be exposed to a cross section of contemporary problems faced by the Australian economy.

BUS 104 Mathematics
The purpose of this unit is to develop skills and concepts in a number of areas of mathematics, apply mathematics to the business environment and develop fundamental skills for further studies in areas such as commerce and information technology.

BUS105 Statistics.
The unit aims to develop statistical concepts and involve students with the collection , presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data. Statistical methods will be used to address problems in areas such as business, industry and government and to discuss the use (and abuse) of statistics presented in the media. The emphasis in this unit is on the meaningful interpretation of statistical information and results. Sources of data will include business, sport medicine, physical science, biological science and social science.

BUS107 Introduction to Computing
The purpose of this unit is to provide a broad understanding of computers, and allows students to acquire skills in the main applications of computers, and appreciate the increasing role of information processing in our evolving society.

BUS108 Management
This unit provides an introductory understanding of the principles and practices related to management in the modern world. Students will acquire knowledge and basic skills in relation to these principles and practices, together with an insight into organizational behaviour issues which impact upon management strategies.

BUS109 Marketing
This unit provides students with an understanding of modern marketing principles in an increasingly competitive marketing environment.

COM100 Information Design
An overview of the theory and application of designing information for a range of purposes, and in a range of media particularly in relation to paper-based media and electronic media. Students will learn to use the software tools to both create and view information designed for different media. Important concepts include design principles for creating messages contained in graphical, video, sound and textual information.

COM101 Programming
Introduction to fundamental concepts and techniques of computer programming. Students learn to solve problems by writing programs in a structured high-level language such as ISO Pascal. Important ideas include problem solving, good program design, and data abstraction. Basic algorithms (including searching and sorting) and data structures (including arrays, sequential files and lists) are studied in the context of useful applications, such as text processing and databases.

COM102 Introduction to Systems Analysis
This unit is concerned with information and the ways in which it may be represented, arranged, processed, stored, displayed and used in and by information systems. Students will be introduced to a range of information systems concepts based in and outside their immediate experience. Students will be expected to develop an understanding of the nature of analysing, designing and developing information systems.

COM104 Mass Communication 1
A study of the media aims to increase student understanding of how the media work, how they produce meaning, how they are organized, and how they go about the business of constructing reality.

COM105 Mass Communication 11
This unit aims to increase student understanding of how media texts work, how they produce meaning, how media institutions and industries are organized, how media texts construct reality and how audiences interpret and understand media texts.

SCN100 Science for Nursing
This unit provides the background science required for entry to the Nursing course at Edith Cowan University. Students are introduced to the various levels of chemical and biochemical organization in living systems and to physiological processes dependent on them. The unit examines those aspects of physics important in nursing practice: mechanics, fluid behavior and pressures, energy and nuclear radiation. Students will also become familiar with units of measurement and mathematical techniques relevant to the nursing profession.
